Wholesome, family entertainment does exist, and where else would you expect to find it but in Amish Country?
“Ohio Star Theater performances focus on Amish themes and values while offering high-quality entertainment that ranges from plays to musicals to concerts,” said Steve Schneiter, general manager of the theater. “Guests are often surprised by the technical quality of our productions in our state-of-the-art facility that features crystal clear LED backdrops.”
Because Ohio Star Theater is conveniently located on Dutchman Hospitality’s Dutch Valley campus in Sugarcreek, theater- goers can enjoy a hearty dinner and settle in for a relaxing evening in clean, comfortable accommodations when the curtain drops.
“With the Carlisle Inn and the Dutch Valley Restaurant, market and gift shop, this is a one-stop destination where people can relax and enjoy life,” Schneiter said. “The theater is a big part of the experience.”
Performances, for example, will take audiences from the country twang of Nashville to the Pacific sands of sunny California with tribute shows that feature a salute to such stars as Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and Elvis Presley and a presentation of the look and sound of the Beach Boys. In July, Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent will provide an energetic and lively evening of bluegrass and gospel, while the Glenn Miller Orchestra swings in to bring back the most famous sounds of the ‘30s and ‘40s — like “Moonlight Serenade” and “In the Mood.”
Meanwhile, the theater’s Blue Gate musicals emphasize clean family entertainment without foul language, Schneiter said.
“Dear Soldier Boy,” which runs through Wednesday, Nov. 1, is an example. Set during the 1990 War in Iraq, the show tells the story of a pair of Amish friends who volunteer to write letters of encouragement to the men who are deployed into the conflict. Anna wants to be a blessing while Sofia wants to find a husband. What could possibly go wrong with such a pure and noble mission? “Dear Soldier Boy’ is a long-running musical that is funny and thought provoking,” Schneiter said. “It has professional actors, so you really get high-quality entertainment.”
Discount packages are available to help guests save money on meals, lodging and entertainment, he said.
“If you take in a show and stay on campus at our hotel or go get a meal here, you can get discounts for that,” he said. “We also have group discounts for parties of 20 or more. The rooms at the Carlisle Inn were recently renovated, and they are absolutely beautiful. Whether you stay
in Sugarcreek or at our Walnut Creek location, we are focused on making sure that our guests can rest, relax and get away from the stress and strain of daily life for a night, a weekend or a week,” Schneiter said.
